Michael Glick - Dental education 2040

Michael Glick is an American dentist, professor, researcher and former dean of the State University of New York at Buffalo, School of Dental Medicine. Dr Glick is the editor of the Journal of the American Dental Association.

There is no doubt that dental students graduating today are informed and competent according to our present knowledge of materials, techniques, pathophysiology and more. The challenge facing dental education is to graduate a dental student today that is a well-informed and a knowledgeable dentist in 2040. As we can only, with much uncertainty, imagine what the future may bring, we need to provide dental students with the right tools to be able to access and reassess emerging knowledge to inform their evolving practices. Opportunities and challenges abound and we must have the courage to recognize the need for change. This presentation will explore how readily availability biomedical-related information will shape patient expectations, how emerging novel areas of oral health research may affect overall health and the traditional role of oral health care professionals, the need for a closer relationship with industrial partners, and how concepts such a critical thinking will be a necessity for any provider of oral health care.
